The Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA) is a trade association that represents independently-owned sawmills, lumber treaters, and their suppliers in 17 states throughout the Southeast. SLMA’s members produce more than 2 billion board feet of solid sawn lumber annually, employ over 12,000 people, and responsibly manage over a million acres of forestland. These sawmills are often the largest job creators in their rural communities, having an economic impact that reaches well beyond people that are in their direct employment. The association serves as the unified voice of its members on state and federal government affairs and offers various other programs including networking events, marketing and management, and operational issues.
The Southern Forest Products Association was founded in 1915 as the Southern Pine Association. Today, SFPA is recognized as one of the foremost trade organizations in the forest products industry and represents Southern Pine lumber manufacturers from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Published 12 times a year in a tabloid format, with forest family-friendly outreach, on-site logger interviews and profiles, and flavorful blend of information and entertainment, Southern Loggin’ Times is the most popular publication that focuses on the forest-rich South. The Price Companies, Inc., based in Monticello, Arkansas, is one of the largest and most experienced wood processing companies in the U.S. It was established by John Porter Price in 1965 as a lumber, logging, and sawmilling operation. The Price Lumber Co. sawmill still bears his name. In 1981, the company engineered a rotating drum tree debarker that eventually changed the focus of Price from lumber and milling to equipment fabrication and contract wood chipping.
The National Timber Harvesting and Transportation Safety (THATS) Foundation is a charitable 501(c)3 organization administered by the Forest Resources Association. Established in 1991, THATS has the following Mission: “to promote, support, and serve as a catalyst for safe and professional work attitudes, practices, and conditions in timber harvesting and transportation.
